April Fools at Google

April 1, 2008 · 2 Comments

I love checking out the annual Google pranks on April 1 each year. Last year was Google TiSP, which was a plan offering free broadband internet service, accessed by flushing a cable down your toilet where it would be hooked up by a Google diver. [I'll admit, I was hopeful for a bit simply because of the idea of free internet.]

This year included a couple of great new ideas:

First is Virgle, a joint venture with Richard Branson to start the first colonies on Mars.

Second is a little less grand in scope, but futuristic nonetheless. It’s Gmail Custom Time, which allows users to select what time their email “was sent,” thereby never being late again. Although, this can only be achieved by utilizing Google’s “e-flux capacitor,” and only allows 10 time-shifts due to some apparently complex calculus.

What a great place to work.

Happy April 1!
